Anyone who eats while on a weight-loss injection often eats only a fraction of what used to be on the plate. GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide or tirzepatide dampen the appetite so strongly that energy intake can fall by up to 40%. That is part of the intended effect. But it has a downside that rarely appears in advertising: as the amount of food falls, so does the amount of vitamins, minerals and protein you take in each day.

It is precisely here that a legitimate question arises, and alongside it a whole wave of marketing. On the one hand there are nutrients whose supplementation is well justified on scientific grounds under GLP-1 therapy. On the other hand, providers advertise "natural weight-loss injections", fat burners and miracle capsules that have nothing to do with serious nutrient supply. This article separates the two cleanly: what really has substance and what is pure hype.

Important upfront and without qualification: the weight-loss injection is a prescription-only medicine and belongs in medical hands. No food supplement replaces the injection, enhances its effect or treats obesity. Why nutrient gaps arise under the weight-loss injection in the first place

The mechanism is simple and precisely for that reason well documented. When you eat less, you take in less of everything, including the substances your body cannot produce itself. Under GLP-1 therapy there is the added complication that many users not only eat smaller portions but also lose the variety of their diet. Early satiety, changed taste preferences and sometimes nausea mean that entire food groups land on the plate less often.

In scientific observation, the same deficits recur among GLP-1 users: vitamin D, magnesium, potassium, choline, iron, vitamin B12, calcium and thiamin, i.e. vitamin B1. This is not a list of marginal phenomena, but concerns nutrients that are central to muscles, nerves, energy balance and bones. The loss is therefore not only a question of calories, but of building blocks the body needs for its basic functions.

From this follows the professional recommendation that appears in several review papers: professional dietary counselling, a diet as nutrient-dense as possible and, where gaps remain, a multivitamin as basic cover. This is not a marketing promise, but the sober consequence of the fact that less eating automatically means less nutrient supply. A broad micronutrient foundation: the obvious first step

When the amount of food is permanently low, a good multivitamin is the most practical way to cover many small gaps at once. Instead of guessing individually which of the many micronutrients is currently falling short, a broadly positioned complex secures the basis. This is exactly what this product category is intended for, and this is precisely where nutrient supply under GLP-1 therapy is well justified on scientific grounds.

In this category, BASE by Fifty Five belongs. BASE delivers a broad foundation of vitamins and minerals, including two nutrients that become scarce more often among GLP-1 users in studies: vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin and thiamin, i.e. vitamin B1. According to the specifications of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the normal functioning of the nervous system. With small portions and reduced intake during the transition phase, a secured supply is relevant at this point.

Thiamin plays a comparable role: according to EFSA, thiamin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and is thus part of the machinery that turns food into usable energy. When this machinery starts to stutter under permanently low intake, you notice it in everyday life, not in a lab value. Vitamin D: one of the most common deficiencies, with or without the injection

Vitamin D is among the top deficits among GLP-1 users, and this coincides with an already widespread problem: a large part of the adult population is inadequately supplied over the winter months, because the body's own production through the skin needs sunlight. Under a weight-loss injection, the reduced amount of food makes the situation worse still, because even the small amount that normally comes through food declines further.

Vitamin D is relevant when losing weight for a concrete reason: according to EFSA, it contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function and to the maintenance of normal bones. Both are important precisely when the body loses weight quickly. Because a considerable part of the lost weight can consist of muscle mass rather than fat, which is why it is central under the weight-loss injection to specifically avoid muscle loss. A good vitamin D supply is no miracle cure against muscle loss here, but a building block that contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function.

For targeted vitamin D supply there is RISE by Fifty Five, which combines 50 µg of vitamin D3, i.e. 2,000 international units (IU), with vitamin K2 per capsule. Magnesium: relevant in the transition phase and for the muscles

Magnesium is one of the most common deficits under GLP-1 therapy and at the same time a nutrient that plays a part in several places important for losing weight. It is involved in muscle contraction and, according to EFSA, contributes to normal muscle function and to normal protein synthesis. Anyone who loses weight and wants to keep their muscles depends on a functioning protein synthesis, because this is exactly where the body builds up muscle protein. The transition phase of a weight-loss injection also often brings accompanying effects that are linked to the fluid and mineral balance. According to EFSA, magnesium contributes to electrolyte balance and to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. This does not mean that magnesium treats side effects of the injection. It means that a secured magnesium supply is a sensible building block while your body gets used to the new situation.

This is where CALM by Fifty Five belongs, which provides 206 mg of magnesium per daily dose, i.e. 55% of the nutrient reference value, and combines two magnesium forms with vitamin B6. Omega-3: for heart and mind during the weight-loss process

Omega-3 fatty acids are not right at the top of the deficit list of GLP-1 users, but they have their own well-justified place. The marine omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are relevant for heart and brain, and both organs benefit from a stable supply, especially during a phase in which diet and body weight change significantly. This is a nutrient-supply argument, not a weight-loss promise, and that is exactly how it should be understood.

According to EFSA, EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart from a daily amount of 250 mg, and DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function from 250 mg. Anyone who reduces their diet significantly while rarely eating fatty sea fish has a plausible gap here. A targeted omega-3 source closes it, without having to ascribe effects to the nutrient that it does not have.

What is marketing, not serious nutrient supply

As soon as a topic gets attention, products push into the market that have little to do with the matter. With the weight-loss injection this is particularly striking. Terms like "natural weight-loss injection" suggest that a powder or a capsule could do the same as a prescription-only medicine. That is misleading. Plant substances, dietary fibre or bulking agents can support a feeling of satiety, but they do not mimic a GLP-1 receptor agonist and are no substitute for a medically supervised therapy.

So-called fat burners are similarly questionable. They promise to "burn" fat or to "boost" the metabolism, often with high caffeine doses or opaque blends. Such products have nothing to do with the actual task under a weight-loss injection, namely to supply the body well despite reduced food and to preserve muscle. They solve a problem you do not even have under the injection and ignore the problems you actually have.

The honest dividing line therefore runs clearly. Nutrient supply means specifically closing observed nutrient gaps, with substances whose effect is backed by EFSA claims. Hype means selling a product on a promise it cannot keep. Anyone who supplements under the injection should always ask themselves: does this close a real gap, or am I just buying a promise?

What you should have medically assessed rather than guessing

A multivitamin covers the broad field, but it does not replace diagnostics. For two nutrients, a look at the lab is especially worthwhile before you dose high on your own. The first is vitamin D: the status can be determined by a simple blood test, and only this way do you know whether and how much you really need. Blanket high doses without knowledge of the starting value are not the right way.

The second is iron. Iron is among the deficits observed in studies under GLP-1 therapy, but it is a nutrient you should not supplement blindly. Too much iron can be harmful, and a deficiency should be medically confirmed before you specifically top up. For precisely this reason, iron is deliberately not part of the Fifty Five range. The basic rule is simple: what you can broadly secure, you secure. What belongs to diagnostic clarification, you clarify with your doctor.
